REMINDER - Upgrades to Lunenburg’s Wastewater Treatment Plant
- Details
- Published: Friday, 27 February 2026 11:48
The Town of Lunenburg is planning to perform equipment replacement at the Lunenburg Wastewater Treatment Plant that shall create periods of disruption to the Town’s wastewater treatment process.
The first of these periods of disruption is scheduled for Monday, March 2 for a 21-hour period from 8:00 AM to 5:00 AM.
It is estimated that during this first scheduled period of disruption for the headworks equipment replacement work, approximately 2,975 m3 of wastewater will be released into Lunenburg Front Harbour from three relief points located near 3 Brook Street, 34 Bluenose Drive, and 176 Bluenose Drive, in Lunenburg. These locations occasionally see overflows of wastewater during heavy rain events due to system design to relieve pressure from high volumes in the collection system due to wet weather.
This equipment replacement work at the Lunenburg Wastewater Treatment Plant is integral to the system’s operation and must be completed by redirecting wastewater flows. As a result, the Town of Lunenburg has scheduled this period of disruption to take place during expected times of no/low precipitation to reduce flows within the wastewater collection system. This will help minimize the impact on customers and the environment while ensuring customers continue to have wastewater service during this period. This same approach shall be applied to all the periods of disruption.
To reduce pressure on the wastewater system and minimize environmental impact during these periods of disruption, we are asking Town of Lunenburg wastewater customers to assist in reducing wastewater flows in our system. Please minimize use of running water, flushing toilets or doing laundry during these times.
The other periods of disruption remain tentatively scheduled for (estimated wastewater overflow during period of disruption in brackets) :
- The week of March 9 for a 21-hour period from 8:00 AM to 5:00 AM (2,975 m3),
- The week of March 30 for a 6-hr period from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM (850 m3)
Note: These times could change depending on weather or other factors
Further details shall be provided by the Town in due course to confirm the dates and times for the commencement of each of the periods of disruption to the wastewater treatment process.
