ROAD CLOSURE - MAPLE AVENUE - October 21

There will be a road closure on Maple Ave (near civic 122), from 9am until 5pm, to allow Public Works to make repairs to a sewer service.
The road will be closed, with local traffic only on both the North and South ends of Maple Ave.
Please note that there will be no thru traffic during the work. Road users and pedestrians should follow signage and devices when travelling through this section of Town.

Statement from Lunenburg Town Council on the Passing of Ben Smith
The Town of Lunenburg extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Ben Smith, whose dedication to our community leaves a lasting legacy.
Ben began his career with National Sea Products in Lunenburg in 1964, eventually becoming Vice President of Engineering. His work helped shape the company’s operations across Canada and internationally. Following his retirement in 1999, he continued to serve as a consultant and later played an important role in the restoration of St. John’s Church after the devastating fire in 2001.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Ben devoted countless hours to community service. He was actively involved with the Lunenburg Curling Club, Bluenose Golf Club, Lunenburg Board of Trade, Lunenburg Marine Museum Society, and numerous other organizations. He was also a founding chair of Curl for a Cause and contributed significantly to fundraising efforts supporting local hospitals.
His commitment to Lunenburg was recognized with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. In 2018, Ben and his wife, Roxie, were honoured as the Town’s Volunteers of the Year.
Ben’s generosity, leadership, and commitment to making Lunenburg a better place will be remembered with deep appreciation. Our thoughts are with Roxie, their family, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

PROJECT UPDATE - PELHAM ST ROAD RECONSTUCTION - CONSTRUCTION COMMENCING OCTOBER 20
The Contractor has advised they are commencing construction on Tuesday, October 20 and work is expected to last approximately four weeks. The scope includes sewer main and service upgrades and a complete rebuild of the road structure.
The work affects Pelham Street between the Hopson and Prince Streets and shall require a continuous road closure with a detour in place for traffic shown in the diagram below:
- RED shows the construction zone on Pelham
- ORANGE shows the local traffic only zone
- BLACK ARROWS identify the detour route around the construction zone for westbound traffic travelling along Pelham
- PINK ARROWS identify the detour route around the construction zone southbound traffic on Hopson (intending to travel westbound on Pelham)
All road users (including pedestrians) should use caution, follow direction from site personnel and look to avoid this section of Town if possible while the construction is underway.
The Town of Lunenburg apologises for any short-term inconvenience the work may cause.
Notification: Scheduled Wastewater Overflow Into Front Harbour

Notification of Scheduled Wastewater Overflow into Lunenburg Front Harbour due to Equipment Upgrades and Commissioning at Wastewater Treatment Plant
The Town of Lunenburg is planning to perform equipment upgrades and commissioning at the Lunenburg Wastewater Treatment Plant that shall create periods of disruption to the Town’s wastewater treatment process. These periods of disruption are tentatively scheduled for a 5-hour period during November 25, a 5-hour period during December 1, a 3-hour period during December 9, and a 3-hour period during January 6, 2027. These times could change depending on weather or other factors. It is estimated that during these scheduled periods of disruption for the equipment replacement work, a total of approximately 2,150 m3 of wastewater will be released into Lunenburg Front Harbour from three relief points located near 3 Brook St., 34 Bluenose Dr., and 176 Bluenose Dr., Lunenburg. These locations occasionally see overflows of wastewater during heavy rain events due to system design to relieve pressure from high volumes in the collection system due to wet weather.
This equipment upgrade and commissioning at the Lunenburg Wastewater Treatment Plant is integral to the system’s operation and must be completed by redirecting wastewater flows away from the Plant. As a result, the Town of Lunenburg will schedule the periods of disruption to take place during expected times of no/low precipitation to reduce flows within the wastewater collection system. This will help minimize the impact on customers and the environment while ensuring customers continue to have wastewater service during this period.
To reduce pressure on the wastewater system and minimize environmental impact during these periods of disruption, we are asking Town of Lunenburg utility customers to reduce wastewater flows. Please minimize use of running water, flushing toilets or doing laundry during these times.
Furthermore, during a 355-hr period during the period of December 1 to 16, as the new treatment process is brought online, all wastewater will receive partial treatment including solids removal, but the treatment process will not be at full effectiveness yet. During this period, a total of approximately 47,780 m3 of wastewater that is not fully treated may be released at the usual outfall near 34 Bluenose Dr. As the process gets established and the biomass builds up, wastewater effluent quality will gradually improve until it meets the federal regulatory requirements by the end of this period.
Further details shall be provided by the Town in due course to confirm the dates and times for the commencement of each of the periods of disruption to the wastewater treatment process.

The Town of Lunenburg is planning to perform an electrical service changeover at the Lunenburg Wastewater Treatment Plant that shall create periods of disruption to the Town’s wastewater treatment process. These periods of disruption are tentatively scheduled for a 30-hour period during November 3-5, another 6-hour period during November 5, a 6-hour period during November 9, and a 6-hr period during November 12. These dates are preliminary could change depending on weather or other factors.
