What is an encroachment?

Encroachments occur when something moveable like a patio table or something permanent like a set of stairs ends up partially or entirely within a public street.They’re about the relationships between private and public property.

Unique, historic Old Town

The Old Town is unique. The streets we use today are still the same size as they were when horseback and walking were the best way to get around. Now, we separate pedestrians from motor vehicles for the safety of everyone.

Why Do We Need Licenses?

Summer in Lunenburg is beautiful! It’s lovely to see so many people wander the streets and enjoy time outdoors on the sidewalk. Because of our unique streets it’s important we all work together to keep everyone safe.

Encroachment Licenses are the mechanism we use to ensure that public spaces remain safe. They help regulate how we share the public parts of our Town for the safety of everyone. A sandwich board or staircase that takes up the sidewalk can pose a tripping hazards for pedestrians. And if you have mobility issues, this might make Old Town a near-impossible obstacle to you.

Common Encroachments

• Homes - including stairs and decks
• Business sidewalk signs
• Patios and sidewalk tables of cafés and restaurants

Important Facts

• Licenses are for 5-10 years depending on the type
• Encroachments need to leave 1.2m of sidewalk space open
• Encroachments are reviewed by Town staff to ensure that there is safe access for pedestrians, snow clearance, and that they meet basic access standards.

Starting on Monday, July 13, residents and contractors will be able to apply for permits online using our new Regional E-permit Application Portal, shared by the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg, Town of Bridgewater, Town of Lunenburg, and Region of Queens.
