Sold waste collection 2024

PLEASE NOTE: Snow vs. Waste Collection

  • Make sure there is a path to your bags or bins.
  • Place bags and bins where they won't get hit by the snowplow or sidewalk plow.
  • Wait until the morning of collection to place waste at curbsite - do not place it the night before.
  • Retrieve any bags that are pushed into the ditch, as the waste hauler is not permitted to grab them.
  • Listen to local radio, visit the Town social media or turn on notifications on the R6RECYCLES app for waste collection cancellations/re-scheduling.

Solid Waste Collection

The Town's Solid Waste Management By-law #38 provides details of how waste is to be stored, sorted and disposed of in the Town of Lunenburg. Waste must be sorted into four streams and placed at or near the curb for collection on your collection day. Two streams (recyclables and paper) are collected one week and the other two streams (organics and other non-reusable waste) are collected the following week. Place recyclables in blue bags, paper in either the grocery store or clear bags, organics in the compost cart, and other non-reusable waste (i.e. garbage) in clear bags. Waste that is not properly sorted will not be picked up by the Town's collection contractor. Please have your items out for collection by 6:00 a.m.

On August 25, 2020, Council passed a motion to adopt and implement a new pdf Waste Reduction (1.35 MB) (with the deferral of the proposed ban on single-use, non-recyclable election signs for the 2020 Municipal Election).

A   pdf Garbage Collection Schedule (803 KB)  (calendar) is prepared yearly and mailed to Town of Lunenburg residents. If you did not receive a collection schedule, they can be picked up at the Town Hall, 119 Cumberland Street.

A Town map showing the days of the week when solid waste is collected and showing the collection routes can be viewed at pdf Garbage Collection Routes (88 KB) .

Clear Bag Program

All residents and businesses in the Town of Lunenburg are required to place garbage (non-recyclable waste) in clear bags for curbside collection. Clear bags are available at hardware stores, department stores and grocery stores. This is in accordance with the Solid Waste Management By-Law 2015.

On Green Weeks, each household and/or business will be permitted to place one opaque bag (black or dark green) curbside per collection day. It is preferred that you put this garbage in a reusable, waterproof, animal-proof garbage can (metal or plastic), which eliminates the use of opaque garbage bags. If you have to place additional garbage curbside, you are required to place it in clear plastic garbage bags so the entire contents can be seen by the garbage collector to ensure there are no recyclables or other non-garbage items.

You may only place a maximum of one opaque garbage container/bag and five (5) clear bags OR six (6) clear bags of garbage per scheduled collection day. Please have your items out for collection by 6:00 a.m. Thank you.

Bulky Waste Program

As of April 28, 2020, the Town of Lunenburg implemented a year-round bi-weekly (every two weeks) bulky item collection program and discontinued the spring/fall clean-up day special collections. This will allow you to dispose of bulky items more than just twice per year.

The new bulky item collection program allows businesses and residents to place ONE bulky item alongside your garbage on regular garbage & compostainer collection weeks. These collections are shown in green on the 2020 collection calendar.

A “bulky item” for example can be a chair, a sofa, a mattress, a washing machine, or a wooden pallet. IF you have no bulky item to dispose of, you are allowed ONE extra clear bag of garbage – i.e., one bulky item OR one additional clear bag per collection, not both. Please have your items out for collection by 6:00 a.m.

Please keep in mind that the items which were unacceptable for special collection are still unacceptable for bulky item collection. See the attached chart for a fuller list of what items are and are not acceptable. Thank you for your cooperation.

Compostainers

Compost bins were supplied to all residents when the recycling program began in the Town of Lunenburg. Compost carts are assigned to the property where they were delivered and must stay on that property. If you recently purchased a property in the Town, please check to ensure the previous owner did not take the compost cart in error. Mini bins were also provided to store and transfer organics from the kitchen to the compost cart. Property owners that require a compost cart or mini bin should contact the Public Works Superintendent at 634-8992 (ext 245). Charges apply for replacement carts and mini bins.

Compost bins do not require a liner. Please note that so-called "compostable" plastic bags are no longer being accepted as of November 1, 2022. (These bags do not break down in sufficient time for a composting facility to be able to make grade A compost; they can also get caught in grinders and cause damage to equipment or contamination to the compost.) If you prefer a liner, please use paper bags.

Compost Site

The Town of Lunenburg operates a FREE municipal compost site on Starr Street. The site is available to Town of Lunenburg residents only. Residents are welcome to dispose of leaves, tree limbs and garden waste at this site. (Any other compostables should go in your green bin.) PLEASE NOTE:  SITE IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED AND MAY OPEN INTERMITTENTLY.  Please watch our website and social media for updates or call 902 634 4410.

Please note that this site is for garden waste ONLY. Other compostables should go in your green bin.
