Lunenburg Joins Maritime Municipal Electric Utility Alliance

Lunenburg Joins the Maritime Municipal Electric Utility Alliance

LUNENBURG, N.S. – The Maritime Municipal Electric Utility Alliance (MMEUA) is pleased to welcome the Town of Lunenburg and its municipal electric utility as the newest member of the Alliance.

MMEUA brings together municipally owned electric utilities across the Maritimes to collaborate, share expertise, and strengthen local leadership in the clean energy transition. With the addition of Lunenburg, the Alliance continues to grow its collective voice and capacity to serve customers and communities.

Lunenburg Mayor Jamie Myra says the decision to join MMEUA reflects the town’s commitment to ensuring its residents have reliable and sustainable power services.

“Joining MMEUA is a positive step for our community. It allows us to benefit from collaboration across the Maritimes. This partnership positions us to access innovation, funding, and shared services that will only serve to continue to strengthen service for Lunenburg residents.”

The Lunenburg Electric Utility has been municipally owned since 1937 and today provides service to about 2,300 metered customers, along with several hundred unmetered lighting and service accounts. It serves Lunenburg and surrounding areas, maintaining local ownership and accountability while ensuring reliable distribution for residents and businesses.

“We are delighted to welcome Lunenburg into the Alliance,” says Glen Fillmore, Chair of MMEUA and Vice-President, Strategic Growth and Transformation at Saint John Energy.

“The utility has a long tradition of local service and strong community connections. By joining MMEUA, Lunenburg gains access to shared expertise, innovative tools and opportunities to secure funding for smart grid and clean energy projects. Together, we can modernize our grids, strengthen resilience, and deliver sustainable solutions while keeping decisions local.”

Paul Nopper, Chief Administrative Officer for the town, adds that the move strengthens the utility’s long-term outlook. “As part of MMEUA, we gain access to collective initiatives that can unlock savings, improve reliability, and build resilience. This collaboration ensures Lunenburg is well positioned to deliver reliable and sustainable power to our community well into the future.”

The Alliance, launched last February, includes municipal utilities in Saint John, Edmundston and Perth-Andover in New Brunswick; Antigonish, Mahone Bay, Berwick, Riverport and now Lunenburg in Nova Scotia; and Summerside in Prince Edward Island.

Clarification re: Solterre Development Survey

Some residents/business in Lunenburg may have recently received a survey from Solterre Development in regards to a proposed development at the Falkland & Brook site.

For clarification, the Solterre Development Survey is the developer’s survey and the Town had no part in the creation or development of the survey.

The Town had asked that this be made clear and that public comments on the development should be made to our community development department (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) in writing or by attending the upcoming Public Participation Meeting on October 15 to provide feedback.

When: Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at 6:00 p.m.

The applicant, Solterre Inc., has submitted a revised proposal for a 3- and 6-storey multi-unit residential building with 48–52 apartments, including 16 affordable units, shared amenities, and about 50 parking spaces. To proceed, the project requires:

  • Use Rezoning: From Mixed Use Commercial to General Commercial (removes the requirement for ground-floor commercial space).
  • Form Rezoning: For PID 60703881, from Old Town/New Town 1 to Marine Form (allows more flexibility in building placement and design).

This is your opportunity to learn about the project, ask questions, and share feedback before any decisions are made.
