Update on the Town's Copper and Lead Management Program

The Town of Lunenburg has selected and contacted ten applicants for the 2026 Lead and Copper Management Program.

For the successful applicants, samples will be taken from their kitchen faucet during the Summer period for analysis at an approved laboratory, with lead and copper levels measured against Health Canada Guidelines. Individual Residents shall be notified of the results related to the property, and shall receive recommended precautions in the case of any exceedances.

ROAD CLOSURE - JUNE 17 - BLUENOSE DRIVE

On Wednesday, June 17th, Bluenose Drive from Rum Row to Montague Street will be closed from 1:00pm to 4:00pm, to vehicles. The sidewalks will remain open. Road users and pedestrians should follow signage and devices when travelling near this area. The road closure is for the cleaning and maintenance of the Bluenose Drive Lift Station.

As we head into a busier part of the year with more outdoor activities (and open windows), it seems like a great time to answer some of the more frequently asked questions we have received about the Town of Lunenburg’s Noise By-law.

❓Why did the Town update the Noise By-law?
The updated by-law provides clearer rules and enforcement standards while balancing the needs of residents, businesses, community events, and the Town's working waterfront.
 
❓What are the Quiet Hours?
Quiet Hours are from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. During these hours, stricter noise standards apply.
 
❓Does the by-law prohibit all noise?
No. The by-law is not intended to eliminate normal everyday sounds. It focuses on excessive, disruptive, or unreasonable noise that interferes with the enjoyment of neighbouring properties.
 
❓How are noise complaints assessed?
Complaints are reviewed using a "reasonable person" standard. This means noise is assessed based on what an average person would consider excessive or disruptive in a similar setting.
 
❓Are businesses allowed to make noise?
Yes. Normal business operations are permitted, provided the noise does not become excessively loud or disruptive as defined by the by-law.
 
❓Are festivals and community events affected?
The by-law allows for approved community events, festivals, and celebrations. Event organizers may apply for noise exemptions when necessary.
 
❓How does the by-law affect restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues?
The Town works alongside provincial regulators like the Alcohol, Gaming, Fuel and Tobacco Division of Service Nova Scotia (AGFT), when concerns involve licensed establishments. Complaints may be reviewed under municipal regulations as well the province may decide to have the AGFT review and determine if the noise infracts on their Liquor License, if determined that it does, AGFT may then put conditions on their Liquor License.
 
❓What about construction work?
Construction activities are generally permitted between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., provided equipment is properly maintained and operated responsibly.
 
❓Are heat pumps and air conditioners covered by the by-law?
Yes. Mechanical equipment such as heat pumps, air conditioners, and ventilation systems must not create excessive noise that unreasonably disturbs neighbouring properties.
 
❓How do I report a noise concern?

❓What happens if someone violates the by-law?
