At its February 13, 2024 meeting, the Town of Lunenburg Council approved the Old Town Lunenburg Heritage Conservation District (HCD) Plan and By-law. After completing the required provincial review, both are now officially approved and in effect, replacing and repealing the 2001 HCD Plan and Bylaw.

What are some of the changes?

  • Updated to conform with best heritage practices such as values-based conservation and the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada
  • New Statement of Significance that captures all the reasons Old Town Lunenburg is a National Historic Site and World Heritage Site
  • Clarification on what properties contribute to the district's heritage value (character-defining), which are supporting, and which are locally significant.

Effective Date

The Old Town Lunenburg Heritage Conservation District Plan and By-law will take effect as of this notice: February 19, 2025.
