The Town of Lunenburg is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic summer student to fill the position of Hertiage Registrar and Archivist. This exciting opportunity aims to address the absence of a dedicated archive for Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, by developing a comprehensive online heritage register. The selected candidate will play a crucial role in organizing, digitizing, and cataloging archival photographs and documents related to Old Town Lunenburg’s historic buildings.

As the Heritage Registrar and Archivist, your responsibilities will include conducting a thorough inventory of historical records, establishing efficient organizational systems, and digitizing materials dating back to the later 1800s. Collaborating with web development professionals, you will contribute to the creation of a user-friendly online heritage register. Engaging with local historians and community stakeholders, you will enrich the historical content of materials and develop outreach strategies for public engagement. This work is crucial to maintaining Old Town Lunenburg World Heritage Site and its history.

What You Possess.

Education

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Archival Studies, Library Science, History, or a related field.

 Technical:

  • Proficient in office software, including Outlook and Microsoft Word
  • Experience with Archival software and digitization tools is required

General

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with project stakeholders
  • Strong organizational skills to conduct a comprehensive inventory and manage digitization tasks
  • Effective time management to adhere to the outlined work plan and timelines

Architectural History:

  • Genuine interest in architectural history, especially related to Old Town Luneburg’s historic buildings is considered an asset
  • Previous experience handling archival documents and interpreting historic photographs is considered an asset

Nestled within Mi’kma’ki, the Town of Lunenburg invites applications for the summer student position of Heritage Research and Interpretation Officer to lead a transformative initiative uncovering and communicating Lunenburg’s often-overlooked Indigenous and Black histories. Lunenburg, a UNESCO candidate will play a pivotal role in developing self-guided tour materials, providing valuable resources for Lunenburg residents and visitors. This is an opportunity for the candidate to develop advanced research and communication skills and contribute to public education at one of Canada’s World Heritage Sites.

As the Heritage Research and Interpretation Officer your role will be to lead the research initiative on Lunenburg’s Indigenous and Black Histories. Develop self-guided tour materials and to foster inclusivity in historical narratives.

What You Possess:

Education:

  • Working toward a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in history, Indigenous Studies, or a related field.
  • Advanced studies such as graduate work in a relevant discipline an asset

Research Expertise:

  • Proven experience in conducting historical research, with a focus on Indigenous and African Nova Scotian history an asset
  • Familiarity with archival materials, oral history interviews and the ability to critically analyze diverse sources

Communication

  • Demonstrated ability to engage with diverse communities, including Indigenous and Black community members
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with ability to convey historical narratives accurately and engage diverse audiences
  • Experience in creating interpretive materials and publications is highly desirable
  • Willingness to work in interdisciplinary environment to ensure high-quality historical interpretation product
  • Strong organizational and project management skills

 Technical

  • Familiarity with standard office software, such as Microsoft Word and Outlook
  • Strong digital skills, including the ability to create and manage content for digital platforms
  • Familiarity with app-based technologies and other digital tools for historical interpretation is an asset

Dive into the unique challenge of preserving our historic wooden architecture while addressing Canada’s housing crisis. As the Town of Luneburg’s Heritage Housing and Design Officer, you will be pivotal in developing innovative design guidelines for infill development in Old Town Lunenburg and administering the Town’s Old Town Lunenburg Hertiage Conservation District Plan and By-law. This hands-on position offers a chance to shape the town’s future, ensuring building alterations and new developments respect and enhance our rich historical character. Join us in this meaningful endeavour, where your urban planning and architecture skills will impact Lunenburg’s architectural heritage.

YOUR ROLE:

  • Develop illustrated design guidelines to complement the Town’s new Hertiage Conservation District Plan
  • Create design concepts for residential infill projects
  • Evaluate proposals and issue Certificates of Appropriateness following the Town’s Old Town Lunenburg Heritage conservation District Plan and By-law

WHAT YOU POSSESS:

EDUCATION:

  • Currently enrolled in a professional architecture or urban planning program, ideally with a focus on heritage conservation or related field

COMMUNICATION

  • Demonstrated ability to engage with stakeholders in community-led design initiatives
  • Strong visual communication skills with the ability to clearly convey design ideas in a compelling way
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and professionally in stressful situations

GENERAL:

  • Willingness to work in an interdisciplinary environment to ensure high-quality products and public service
  • Strong organizational and project management skills

TECHNICAL:

  • Familiarity with standard office software, such as Microsoft Word and Outlook
  • Competency in Computer-Aided Design (CAD)software for creating visually engaging design guidelines and concepts an asset
