At its October 8, 2024 meeting, the Town of Lunenburg Council approved updates to the Municipal Planning Strategy (MPS) and Land Use By-law (LUB). These updates redesignate and rezone properties on Lower Green Street and Tannery Road from General Commercial (CG) to Residential (RES) and Lower Density Residential (RL).
What the Amendments Mean
These changes:
- Return the area to its original residential zoning, reversing the 2021 change to General Commercial.
- Support future development that fits the residential character of the neighbourhood.
- Prevent commercial development that could affect the area’s historic feel.
Provincial Approval
Planning documents like MPS and LUB amendments are reviewed by the Province to ensure compliance with provincial policies. These amendments have been reviewed by the Province and are now officially approved.
While some LUB amendments can be appealed to the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board (NSUARB), this amendment is tied to a required change in the MPS. Therefore, it cannot be appealed under the Municipal Government Act (MGA).
Effective Date: These amendments take effect as of the date of this notice: January 6, 2025
