Town of Lunenburg Signs New Four-Year Collective Agreement with CUPE Local 1780

 Lunenburg, NS – January 29, 2025 – The Town of Lunenburg is pleased to announce that a new four-year Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 1780 has been ratified. This agreement, covering non-management staff in the Public Works Department, will be effective from November 1, 2024, to October 31, 2028. 

The new contract reflects the Town’s appreciation for the essential services provided by Public Works employees and acknowledges the cost-of-living increases facing our community. The agreement includes an average wage increase of $3.50 per hour in the first year, followed by 3% increases annually over the next three years. Additionally, the contract introduces improved benefits, including an extra 0.25 days in retirement recognition and the recognition of the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation as a statutory holiday. 

Mayor Jamie Myra expressed gratitude for the dedication and high standards upheld by the Town’s Public Works employees: 

“Our Public Works team is vital to the success of our community. Their hard work ensures that Lunenburg remains a safe, beautiful, and thriving place to live. This agreement demonstrates our respect for their contributions and ensures that they are supported as they continue their exceptional service.” 

This agreement is fair for all parties and reflects the shared commitment of Council, management and CUPE Local 1780 to serve the best interests of Lunenburg. I greatly appreciate the respectful and collaborative nature of the discussions, which have led to an outcome that supports our employees and aligns with the Town’s financial responsibilities.” 

The Town of Lunenburg’s newly elected Council is proud to have skilled team members in its Public Works Department. With this agreement, the Town affirms its commitment to fostering a supportive and equitable workplace while continuing to provide outstanding service to residents. 

Public Hearing: Proposed New Development in HCD

Lunenburg Town Council will hold a public hearing to review an application for a Certificate of Appropriateness for two proposed developments within the Heritage Conservation District. The application has been reviewed by staff and the Town's Heritage Advisory Committee, and it meets all requirements of the Heritage Conservation District Plan and Bylaw, as well as all other Town of Lunenburg development rules.

A Certificate of Appropriateness is required for certain developments in the Heritage Conservation District to ensure they align with the area’s historic character and comply with design guidelines. While the proposal meets these standards, Council approval is required under Section 4.8 of the Bylaw.

Proposed Developments:

  1. Lot 2 Pelham Street (PID 60719705): A 2 ½ storey gambrel-style residential style building.
  1. Lot 3 Montague Street (PID 60719713): Two 3 ½ storey gambrel-style commercial style buildings connected by a setback enclosed walkway.

  • Date & Time: Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2025 at 6 p.m. (as a part of Council’s Regular meeting)
  • Location: Council Chambers, Lunenburg Town Hall. Please use the accessible back entrance at 120 Townsend Street, Lunenburg, NS. 

Purpose of the Hearing:

The hearing will provide the public an opportunity to learn more about the proposed developments and allow input before Council makes a final decision on issuing the Certificate of Appropriateness.

Public Hearing Notice: Proposed Daycare Lease of Town Land

Lunenburg Town Council will hold a public hearing to discuss the proposed lease of municipal property to the Lunenburg Daycare Centre to build a new daycare facility. If approved, Council is considering providing the lease below market value and is reviewing the following two sites as potential locations:

  1. 87 Victoria Road (Blue Building Site): Centrally located near Bluenose Academy and the recreation complex, this site requires relocation of Public Works and Recreation materials and one tenant demolition of the structure, and potential additional costs.
  1. Starr Street Site (Below Hillcrest Cemetery and across from the Dog Park): Open space with good road access and no flood concerns, but requiring sidewalk installation, utility servicing upgrades, and consideration of its location within the World Heritage Buffer Zone.

  • Date & Time: Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2025 at 6 p.m. (as a part of Council’s Regular meeting)
