The Town of Lunenburg will hold a Public Hearing near the start of the June 24, 2025 Regular Meeting of Council, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in Town Hall. Please use the accessible back entrance at 120 Townsend Street.
This Public Hearing is being held per Section 51 of the Municipal Government Act (MGA), which requires a public hearing before a municipality may sell property valued over $10,000 at less than market value, where such sale is considered beneficial to the community.
About the Property and Proposal
At its meeting on May 27, 2025, Council decided that the building at 18 Dufferin Street (PID 60386232), known as the Old CN Train Station, is no longer needed for Town use and can be sold.
The Town proposes to sell the property to the Second Storey Women’s Centre (SSWC), a long-term tenant and local nonprofit that provides essential social services to women and gender-diverse people in Lunenburg and surrounding areas. SSWC has expressed interest in purchasing the property to continue and enhance its operations.
The sale includes the former train station building and adjacent parking areas. The Town is retaining the trail corridor and will secure a right-of-way easement to ensure continued public access to the trail and parking.
The appraised value of the property (prior to subdivision) was $464,500, but the property is being considered for sale at the assessed value of $383,403, in recognition of the community benefit provided by the Centre.
