Within the past several Capital Budget cycles, the Town of Lunenburg has made a significant investment in pedestrian safety by upgrading selected crosswalks with rapid flashing beacons at each of the following crossings:

 

1. Victoria Road at Green Street

2. Victoria Road at Brook Street

3. Falkland Street at Broad Street

4. Lincoln Street at Starr Street

5. Tannery Road at Knickle Road

6. Victoria Road at the Hardware store

7. Victoria Road at Hall Street

8. Green Street at High Street

9. Dufferin Street at Churchill Street

 

The nine sets of rapid flashing beacons in Lunenburg have all recently been inspected by Public Works and are fully operational. The Town strongly encourages pedestrians to utilize the flashing beacon infrastructure when crossing roadways at these locations, and - did you know - it may even be considered an offence under Nova Scotia’s Motor Vehicle Act if pedestrians enter the crosswalk without first activating the beacons where they are available for use (Section 125 (4))?

 

A reminder that whether a crosswalk has a flashing beacon or not, pedestrians should always establish eye contact with drivers and ensure vehicles are stopped prior to leaving the curb and entering the crosswalk. When the buttons on either side of the crossing are activated, the lights shall flash for approximately 20 seconds.
